Gary, without seeing the fixture I can't say for sure, but I have a strong suspicion it will NOT be enough light by itself. But if you also did a recessed downlight over the sink it would be. Most LED backlit or edge lit mirrors I've seen give out a very nice, soft light, but not enough for critical shaving or make up tasks.
For comparison, a halogen 60 watt bulb puts out lumens, and if doing a typical bath sconce over the mirror, we'd use a double fixture, with lumens total. If you really need to see what you are looking at, more lumens are better. A decorative ceiling light is also a desirable add for the room. Our bathroom is being remodeled and it will be white white wall tiles, white med cab, white countertop, light grey floor tiles..
It will have a large 6' x 3' window next to the vanities. We are looking at Verdera integral lights med cabs and Robern AiO med cab.
The ceiloing will have recessed lights K in a space of 12' x 6'. We are 65 years old and would like natural light from the med cab. Do you think that Aio K is too cool? Pat, apologies for this late reply. I don't get a notice when a new comment has been submitted on this 4 year old article; I only know about them when I happen to revisit the article on the site.
Color temperature is very much a personal preference, from K the color of an incandescent bulb to approaching daylight. My personal go-to is K, which I find to be a pleasant neutral white. Ideally the lighted medicine cabinet would be equipped with LED's that can change color depending on the time of day, or your preference. They make undercabinet lights like that. I hope you chose a color you are happy with, because you'll be living with them a long long time.

Log in or Create account. Menu Cart. June 25, One of the most common questions about lighting regards whether a light fixture will be bright enough for a space. Calculate the square footage of your room The size of your room affects how much light your space requires.
Determine the "foot-candle" factor by room type. I encourage clients to think more creatively in their choices, suggesting they consider a pendant lamp or chandelier instead. Another option is "cove lighting" — rope lights hidden behind a molding dropped several inches below ceiling height — which adds a soft glow around the perimeter of the room.
A small recessed spotlight directed at a piece of decorative art or a beautiful powder room basin creates another layer of light in the bathroom. Similarly, a recessed shower fixture can be angled most can be tilted up to 35 degrees at installation to highlight nice tilework or fixtures and make them sparkle.
To eliminate shadows under the chin, eyes, and cheeks, fixtures should be mounted on either side of the vanity mirror or on the mirror's surface, if it's large , 36 to 40 inches apart.
The center of each fixture should be roughly at eye level, or about 66 inches above the floor. This will guarantee even illumination across the face for grooming. A crisp white light tends to render skin tones most accurately.
Halogen bulbs set the gold standard. Low-voltage varieties with a built-in transformer that converts volts to 12 volts are especially compact, and the smaller bulb gives a nice sparkling effect. Halogen bulbs cost a few dollars more than standard incandescents but can last three times as long. Many feature screw-in bases; those labeled medium-base MB are shaped like standard incandescents, so they fit most fixtures.
The newest compact fluorescent bulbs also offer good color rendering and are up to 10 times more efficient than regular incandescent bulbs. These are a lighting designer's best friend because they grant absolute control over the lighting, and thus the mood, of the room. In a very small space like a powder room, dimming the vanity fixtures might even provide all-in-one task, ambient, and accent lighting. Plus, dimmers conserve energy. The total savings depends on how much you dim the bulb, but one dimmed just 10 percent will last twice as long as a bulb at full brightness.
Today's dimmers work for every kind of light source, though you need to know what to ask for.
